  •  I think this would hit the megachurches and not (17+ / 0-)

have much impact on the small ones.  The people who are giving to the small churches often don't have the income to benefit from tax deductions, and their giving is regardless of whether they'd get a deduction.  Their giving won't change.

Those who with higher incomes might decide to give to some actual charities rather than all to their church, and that I think would hurt the megachurches.

I've long been offended by the exemption for churches.  I'm not religious.  Why should I have to pay higher taxes so that churches can be exempt?  I consider it a violation of the separation of church and state, since the government is subsidizing religion.  It might be subsidizing all religion equally, but it's doing it at the cost of those who are not religious.

right outside of Nashville TN. Maury Davis, the pastor, is a sociopathic, gay-hating, Muslim-hating, Obama-hating, GOP-loving convicted murderer. He brutally slaughtered a 55-year old woman, Jo Ella Liles, then charmed and manipulated his way out of prison in eight years, using 'God's mercy and redemption'. Davis is a dangerous man and is the closest thing to Jim Jones that I have seen. There are thousands in his congregation, and it continues to grow.

Here is an excellent 2009 Nashville Scene article about the murder.

A Grieving Son Finds No Justice On Rev. Maury Davis Path To Redemption

I've been writing about him, and working on an extensive diary, which is way overdue. After exposing him to the FlushRush group during my radio ad monitoring days (yes Maury Davis/Cornerstone occasionally advertise on Limbaugh's show - no surprise) Proglegs did a a short diary about him, but there needs to be more. Maury Davis needs to be rampantly written about and exposed, not only to be examined for corruption and tax-exemption status, but to honor his victim, Jo Ella Liles.

      •  There you are! (9+ / 0-)

Please, please go check out Gary Norton's diary. It seems you've picked up some bad information - sort of like a factual virus - and your diary needs serious attention, if not removal.

do thank you for alerting me. Another lesson I learned is to do my best to read all the messages. It's hard to do sometimes, in the middle of the day.

It's a price paid when a diary makes the rec list. Mixed blessing in that regard.

      •  Leslie, could you clarify whether you (10+ / 0-)

are ignoring the knowledgeable people who've pointed out that you are completely wrong because you think this?

There are people here who use HR's as a form of (10+ / 0-)

power and control. Many HR's are give by people who rarely write diaries, if at all -thus they never put themselves and their work out there to be scrutinized. It's easy to sit back, censor and criticize when you have nothing to lose.

        Because you also said this:
And since when is this not a news site as well? We need the news from which to make our comments and analysis.

I respect and truly adore Daily Kos. For the most part, we keep each other honest and grounded. The HR system is a mess. If a diarist is not there the whole time, and something is misconstrued, the HR's can add up before the diarist can defend themselves.

        Your comment
No one has miscontrued what you said. Your source is wrong, and therefore your diary is wrong. You've had time to deal with it. You've neither corrected the diary nor refuted the commenters, several of whom have expertise in tax law. What's up?

Usually just a handful per day, even in her own diaries. We may have missed her for today, or she may be back briefly in a few hours. This is inherently the problem with not tending a diary, especially if it hits the rect list. If it's good info some don't mind the hit and run - if it's bad info a larger number of people get to see one's errors.

And after today, I'm considering slowing down a bit. Plus it's often bad when I write late into the morning, and my head is not so clear.

Each has it's own style and atmosphere. As you've seen in this instance, DKos is more interactive, and fast moving, than many others out there.

give me a chance to respond. I didn't expect the diary to do so well and was unable to check in and read all the comments.
