    •  That would be internal church doctrine I think (3+ / 0-)

But in any event has nothing to do with the issue at hand, which has to do with van Hollen getting the IRS to clarify the language for organizations seeking to qualify as 501c4 (groups like Crossroads GPS, OFA, the NRA, Sierra Club, etc.). Churches aren't at issue at all in his effort.

e.g. telling your people how to vote.  (in effect that they'll be excommunicated if they voted for Kerry)

Not technically. They were telling Kerry (and any members who cared) what issue to vote for. It's a fine hair to split, but technically they can frown on abortion or dancing or drinking or card playing or birth control or failure to feed the hungry and house the homeless, or draconian immigration laws, or whatever. Then it becomes obvious to their congregants which candidate is the "better" choice.

          •  That's why GOTV is vastly more important. (0+ / 0-)

Even better, make voting mandatory like in Australia.
Not many people vote based on what pastor sayz but plenty of people don't vote.

I get the diarist got the congressman's target wrong.
These political non-church orgs tax exemption are bad news.
