  •  The current we are fighting (5+ / 0-)

Was summarized by the recent FP article about Kynect.

It is likely that anybody predisposed to despise the current president, Democrats, or government in general will willfully suspend their reasoning skills (if indeed these individuals have any) and still proclaim their hate for "Obamacare", even while their lives are made better because of the ACA.

The best path, at least to my eyes, is to hope the GOP continues to flail about defunding or a government shutdown while other parts of the law get implemented.  As time goes by there will be more people benefiting, and hopefully more people realizing that the GOP position is based on nothing at all.

And in our very polarized country, perhaps a small amount of people seeing the truth can tip the scales.  But I wonder how contrite many of the adamant opposers of this law will be when it becomes clear they were 100% (or close it) wrong.

I suspect that it will take more than a few presidential cycles for the lies to die down, if they ever do.  There are still RWNJ's who claim that Medicare and SocialSecurity are failures.

I noticed the caveat "if they have any".
      Oh, they do.
they don't run lights and crash into cop cars very often.
      They don't eat rotten food.
They wash their hands after handling toxic substances.
      They brush their teeth.
They choose from the menu in restaurants, and don't insist that McD's serve them Chik Fil-A...

      you get the idea.
it's a quibble, but I think we do ourselves a disservice when we invoke that caveat, and it gives an 'out' of sorts to those who suddenly become incredibly stupid when they are about to commit an act of rank hypocrisy.
nope. their reasoning skills are in perfect working order, with the small exception of never, ever, under any circumstances, being able to admit being wrong.
THAT is where the RW mind shows its dysfunction.

are almost instinctive, and reptiles, snails, insects, and even unicellular organisms display similar reactions to stimuli and similar eating and disease-avoiding practices.

I think the RW "mind" is more like the reptilian brain or like the amoeba's chemical-based reaction system. What virtually every rightwinger I know does and says does not pass the "reasoning skills" test.

The funny thing is that many of them have the same educational background as normal people. In theory, they are not all stupid - maybe not even ignorant - although you wouldn't know it to listen to them. I think that a life spent listening to extremely skilled liars and propagandists in many areas of their lives: rightwing evengelical preachers who spew that Teh Gays are a' goin' to Hell, talking heads on Fox "News" who lie about everything possible to lie about, the voice of "hate radio" including such well-versed practitioners as Limbaugh, Boortz, and an endless stream of local rightwing radio heroes of the same ilk, and a solid and persistent core of racists, bigots, xenophobes, and overall haters that they encounter in everyday life has eliminated their ability to function in a reality-based manner.
