    It seems Assad's allies will be steadfast in wanting to prevent his ouster, that the opposition or insurgent forces are too fragmented (or even antagonistic) to present any viable negotiating front (and throw in for good measure that the most powerful of these are al Quaeda based), that the US is dead set against Iranian participation in  a diplomatic solution,, that an airstrike will only embolden or delude the opposition militarily, and that meanwhile in the east or north, the country is being overtaken by tribal or sectarian thugs.

    Hard to discern any advantage to helping the 'opposition' overthrow him or otherwise bringing about Assad's departure.
