    The basic Islamic identity of the 'Alawi is still contested by many Sunni. Influential Shia' clerics have, since 1952, pronounced fatwas affirming their Islamic identity, but afaik only one prominent Sunni scholar issued such a fatwa, back in 1936.

      Sunni world, I'm afraid.  A lot of Sunni don't even view mainstream Shia as Muslims.

      I've often wondered if Iran's drive for nukes has less to do with the U.S. and Israel and more to do with the Sunni-Shia divide and they're just using Israel as the regionally acceptable bogeyman to justify it.
