  •  well, the ethnic/sectarian lines have shifted (5+ / 0-)

    over time (which is what makes lebanon's crazy sectarian quota democracy so absurd, since it allocates seats by the 1932 census), so even if they had, the states might not match them today.

    doing it by ottoman vilayet might have made more sense than the sykes-picot lines, though. or just leaving it as one huge country and letting the locals work their own boundaries out without great power "tutelage" and puppet monarchs.
