    as being one of the only countries in the world that would end its troops to places they had never heard of for a cause they did not understand in the name of a higher ideal.  He was writing with WWI and WWII in mind, though the book that is from (Shadows in Paradise) was written in the 1960s.  

    The Brits and French understood the peoples they subjugated, but on their own terms.  We never tried to understand them--either it was through a lens of the Cold War or our post-Cold War economic expansionism.  

    I find Sayyid Qutb to be rather indicative of the reaction from the ME:  we want to reject you and yours and all your ideological imports, as well as your racism and crusaderism.  Let us be so we can establish our own state along lines we understand.  'Course, then Nasser had him tortured and killed...
