    but they're certainly strained for the moment. the arab spring just a few years back started up quite ecumenical, after all, as a pan-arab sort of transnational movement. ultimately, if the forces that are currently driving the present regional crisis are challenged or replaced by other forces or movements, things might realign differently. it does get hard to get past the bad blood borne of these sorts of conflicts, though.

    i still think israeli-palestinian coexistence is possible in the future, for that matter. history shows us that the present influences the future, but it does not determine it in completely predictable ways. identity is a malleable, multilayered thing, and allegiances have a way of shifting with the context.
