  •  when I moved to Texas (0+ / 0-)

43 years ago, I felt quite lost in all the concrete and heat.

Now, I've gotten used to Houston.

I like the warm weather in the winter and I've learned that Texas is no more a cultural desert than any other big town.

I recently moved to an inner loop, culturally diverse neighborhood with quiet streets, trees and wonderful neighbors from all parts of the world including Houston natives. It's the most progressive neighborhood, I've learned, in all of Houston.
I like it. It's like living in a small town within a city.

My dentist is conservative, but for him that means wanting to preserve the environment....

What I think happened in Texas, at least while I've been here is that Republicans like George H W Bush - yes, the Willie Horton scamster politician, IMO,  - thought Texas was ripe for financial adventures in oil and eventually his political ambitions for himself and maybe even his offspring!!
George W Bush ran for office here and Jeb Bush, conquered Florida.

Houston has some really nice people. It's just been run roughshod over a little by Big Oil and Gas which seem to somehow manage to create an aura of right wing fear at the edges of the communities in which they dominate the economy. Take Calgary Alberta - same deal - the newspapers  (at least a few years ago, when I visited, publish letters from equally extreme religious nut right wing, frightened out of their mind, kooks that one finds all over the country.).

So we are all fighting a battle royal with the likes of Koch brothers, (sons of one of the founders of the John Birch Society) et al, to try our best to hold onto the so far imperfect democracy we are lucky enough to have.

Finally people have gotten sick and tired of being had and taken for idiots. Mikhail Gorbachev
