  •  Military pay taxes (7+ / 0-)

They pay Social Security and they pay income taxes, regardless of where they're stationed. Even overseas.

Contractor working overseas are different, but if they're US citizens paid by the US govt they likely pay social security, and have taxes withheld. They might get to offset a lot of their income because of the tax laws, but they still pay some taxes.

are exempt from paying federal and most state's income tax. Plus they get a lot of added pay (hazardous duty pay, dislocation allowance) on top of that.  I'm not saying it's wrong - you are basically a slave to the military 24-hrs-a-day, but since right-wingers want to call anyone who doesn't pay taxes "freeloaders"....

(BTW I was one of those Army "freeloaders" who didn't pay taxes when I was a peacekeeper in Kosovo back in 2000-2001).

      •  Peacekeeper? (0+ / 0-)

According to right wing ideology, peacekeepers are not "real" soldiers, particularly if you were "on loan" to that terrible one-world socialist United Nations.  So to THEM, you were a "socialist freeloader" at that time.

That's THEIR opinion, of course.  I salute you for serving in what may be the most difficult assignment for any troops, many of whom are not appreciated by any of the opposing sides, and are often killed because they have to be so careful not to fire back except in self defense.  You EARNED whatever tax burden you were excused  from!
