  •  Drug testing recipients of gov't money... (5+ / 0-)
it makes as much sense to test bailout-receiving bankers, loan-backed students, defense contractors, tax-supported homeowners, married couples with children (who receive tax credits), and politicians, who aren’t strangers to drug use.
I will point out that employees at defense contractors generally are drug tested -- usually at the time of hire.  And I'm pretty sure that the drug testing is driven by DoD requirements.  At one time, random testing of current employees was also a requirement.

It would be interesting to see which other groups the Republicans would impose drug testing on, if given the opportunity.  My guess is that they would love to make it a requirement for student loans and student aid in general, as Republicans -- for all their talk of the value of education and lifting oneself up by the bootstraps -- seem to hold students in only slightly higher esteem than welfare recipients.

It's why so many companies think that they have to do this crap, even if they're not defense contractors. It forces the big firms to do it and that makes such personal violations look "normal".

    •  My guess to the question in the post is No. (5+ / 0-)
"The real question is whether the hyper-low incident of positive tests will change the conservative notion that poor people are to blame for their own situation."
No amount of reality is important to the conservative decision making process.

      My guess to your statement:

It would be interesting to see which other groups the Republicans would impose drug testing on
Is anybody they somehow associate as being liberal.  You know the people they are thinking about I think we call them "Americans," conservatives call them the 47%.
