  •  Yes, that's exactly right. And it has very little (9+ / 0-)

to do with Obama, rather with the state of the US and the world.

As I've written before, The Puzzle Palace had the exact same type of NSA operations way back in the 70s - spying on every overseas phonecall - minus the tech developments since then.

Bringing attention to this is good but I'm not sure what can be done about it.  Spy types tend to do what they want despite Congress (Nicaragua) or rational thought (Dulles, etc).  They tend to assume that they know best and that anyone who disagrees with them can't be trusted.

    •  Simply ridiculously wrong. (9+ / 0-)

There has NEVER in history been an operation of the size and scope of PRISM simply because there wasn't the technology or human resources available at any time in history for such a thing to have ever existed.  So simply on that basis, you can't possibly make a comparison like that and expect to be taken seriously.  Even if the Puzzle Palace had wanted to do everything the NSA can do, really wanted it, wanted it badly, they didn't have fiber optics and the backbone and yottabyte data centers and voice to text recognition and search engine databases and RDB queries or cell phone location data.  Whatever they were doing might have been ambitious for its time, but it was a stone age ambition, not as dangerous as this by any means.
