    •  I see. (0+ / 0-)

I don't really think it's a falsehood. No, we're not in danger of getting attacked by Assad, obviously. But that doesn't mean we don't have national security interests that would be affected if Assad or others expand their use of chemical weapons.

      •  Well, can you name an example of such an interest (0+ / 0-)

        that would be affected?

        •  I think it might cause the ongoing (0+ / 0-)

war to widen, and those who would consider such attacks might be emboldened to use them. That could provoke both Islamic extremist militants and other nations in the region to respond. That raises the danger of terrorism around the world. Even if our nation isn't directly threatened, I still think it impacts us.

Having said that, I don't think that's the primary reason for considering a response.

          •  Sorry, I don't see it (0+ / 0-)

The only powers in the region who could escalate in response to Assad gassing his own people are the Sunni governments who have been supporting the insurgents. But how are they going to escalate? They are not going to intervene militarily in this conflict - they have neither the means nor the stomach for it. All they can do is intensify their support for the rebels. Bottom line, I don't think escalation is a credible risk.
