  •  I'm glad your meds are helping. I know (14+ / 0-)

exactly what you mean about the process of elimination.  Earlier this year I developed a problem in my left hand.  The extensor muscles in my fingers would not work.  I.e., I could not ldt. Finger and I finally grokked the kitties' laments about not having opposable thumbs.

In early April, I had my final (CC willing) hip replacement operation. I mentioned my problem with my hand simply to make the aware of it.  My hip surgeon referred my problem to a neurologist, who visited me with several minions in tow.  He arranged for testing my arm (quite uncomfortable).  The people doing the testing thought I had some sort of problem because I wasn't talking particularly coherently.  (They were asking questions no one had ever asked before and I was groping for the best words to give them accurate answers.  Sigh.).

So the neurologists sent me for a CT scan of my brain plus an MRI of part of my neck.  The CT scan showed a tiny little anomaly they thought might have been an itty bitty stroke.  So they sent me for three more tests.  The upshot was that my carotid arteries and heart were in tip top condition.   The MRI showed some arthritic spurs on my vertebrae which they thought might be a problem so they referred me to a spinal surgeon.  Fortunately, she was pretty level headed and agreed with me that since I didn't have any problems with my neck, we could let that leveling dog lie.

They finally decided I hadn't had a stroke.

My hand?  I had some nerve damage that would heal on its own.  In. One. To. Three. Years!  That was the absolutely worst news I got in this whole nightmare.  But my hand is improving slowly.

Anyone who tries to suggest that the Canadian medical system isn't very good in terms of level of care doesn't know what they're talking about.  Those guys just kept on arranging tests until they ran out of possibilities.  I had a couple of problems last fall that got the same type of exhaustive investigating.
