      During the time I mention, educated Christian youth were for the most part forced to enter the priesthood where celibacy was required.

      After the 14th century when Europe was greatly depopulated due to plague the fertility rates in Europe climbed to the highest in the world. During this period of population growth Europeans adapted technologies from the near east and china to develop the greatest war making capability in the world at that time.
