Of course, before they wrote down their tribal mythology they were just another pre-literate tribe. It's surprising how similar pre-literate tribal cultures are, it must be hard-wired in the human brain. They all have similar oral traditions; sacred stories that explain who they are and how they got here. They usually have stories about the wanderings of the people. The Old Testament contains a frozen, written version of what was once a living oral tradition not so different from Native American tribal lore. Often the tribe will have a sacred mountain that locates them on the planet, think Mt. Olympus, Mt. Sinai, the Black Hills or Baboquivari Peak.
    It's a fascinating subject.
On the topic of Third Reich diaries, I recommend the diaries of Victor Klemperer

The free market is not the solution, the free market is the problem.

Thank you for the Klemperer lead.

I agree with you on the similarities in the creation myths amend pre-literate cultures. As for the Bible unfortunately I always had a difficulty getting over my revulsion of the God of over a billion people ordering the extermination of a people and the enslavement of their women and children. Some people suggest I get over it because it is after all a myth and other traditions have similar stories and there is a lot more in the Bible (New and Old testament and the Koran), but I am sorry, I cannot forgive God any more than I can forgive others for allowing similar atrocities.
