  •  It seems the administration's actual goal (0+ / 0-) supporting the rebels against Assad, and their minds seem to be made up.

    These leaves me with a the following conclusions:
    1) The administration believes they can help the Rebel's by diminishing Assad's capabilities (perhaps causing his army to capitulate outright).
    2) The administration believes that we can keep the "bad" rebels at arms length and ensure the replacement government is friendly.
    3) This puts Iran in an extremely vulnerable position, opening the door to solutions that didn't exist previously.

    I think this is the basic calculus (factor in some Israel and Egypt variables to varying degrees of relevance).

    We learned from Iraq, however, that things don't always work out the way you planned. I hope this administration is more competent than the last at ME geopolitics. Because I think this is happening regardless of what Congress does.

    I still lean toward trusting Obama's intentions.
