he's one of those rare politicians who got into politics with the idea of being a public servant. As a young senator, before he got sucked into the Washington bubble, he did a lot of good work, on pursuing money laundering by terrorists, on the environment.

Like so many, he put his hope in Obama. He thought he could make one last contribution to his country working under a Democratic administration. Seduced by that hope, he chose to serve as Obama's chief diplomat.

And now Obama is forcing Kerry to sell a war he doesn't really believe in, and in the process, forcing him to flush what remains of his reputation down the toilet.

Powell is and always has been an empty suit. Always. I mean, he knows how to look good in uniform and puff out his chest. That's all he ever knew how to do. That's why he made such a good salesman, because there's nothing going on upstairs.

Obama is a great and terrible seducer. He induces people--good people, people of conscience--to invest their all their dearest hopes in him, to commit themselves utterly to him, to serve him with total loyalty.

And in serving him, all their hopes are transmuted into shit, they become fatally corrupted, and destroy themselves while ruining all they touch. While Obama himself remains completely untouched, just as seductive as ever. And then another group of people come to him begging to serve him, only to suffer the same terrible fate in turn.

In that, he's like Dorian Gray. Well, we all know what happened to Dorian Gray at the end of the book. And if he hits Syria, I think a similar fate awaits Obama.
