  •  The 8th grade ELA test SUCKS. You are (5+ / 0-)

absolutely right about how it is really tricky.  There are several answers that could apply to each question, and yet the test demands only one.  How is the child to know which one is the one the test is requiring?  On some of the questions, I was shocked when the test said which one it thought was the correct answer.  Why is the test not trying to gauge the child's ability to think critically and differentiate among answers, weigh evidence?  Even more than that, the test is really weak as a measure of a child's knowledge of and ability to use language.

As I went along in the test, I thought about what our 8th grade son is learning in school.  Our school district is in the top 5 in our entire state.  We have excellent teachers and curriculum.  And we have just moved to common core.  I thought about how our son won a national gold medal in writing this past year.  About how he is learning to make good arguments in papers for language arts and humanities.  And I see that test and think "WTF?  What the hell does this test have to do with the development of my child's mind, or even with gauging his ability to use the English language?"

I am so glad you did this diary and posted the PDFs.  I am going to send them around to fellow parents and to our school board president.  I am quite sure that most parents have no idea what these fucked up common core tests look like.

That's one more thing to add to my long list of small problems. --my son, age 10
