  •  The problem isn't the police, it's the gun culture (1+ / 0-)

My late mother had Alzheimer's, with paranoid delusions being a big part of it.  She once called 911 to report that people were holding her hostage in her apartment.  She was convinced that a particular aide where she lived was stealing from her, even though my wife or I ALWAYS found what was missing where my mother had presumably hidden it to prevent it from being stolen.  She often said she wished she could just kill the aide who was "stealing" from her.  I am thankful she didn't own a gun, because if she had, I think it's quite likely that she would have killed some innocent person, or she would have been killed herself, or both.

Perhaps the police could have done something different, but it might well have made no difference.  What those who say the police should simply have waited for him to nod off miss is that old people frequently don't sleep very soundly.  He would quite likely have awakened if they entered his room, grabbed his gun, and the same thing would have happened.

107 years old or not, this guy could very easily have killed or wounded one or more police officers.  When he began firing at them for a SECOND time, I'm not going to second guess their decision to fire back.

Bin Laden is dead. GM and Chrysler are alive.
