The big thing to happen that year was the San Francisco earth quake.  When Pres Teddy Roosevelt went to Panama, to inspect the Panama Canal construction, it was the first time a sitting prez had left the country.

I have no idea where the author got his stats but:

As to the guns - I believe this because most households were not in cities. Villages were more rural.  Guns were very expensive in the 1800's and I bet a lot of them were just handed down, and stayed in families.  How expensive were guns?  In the early 1800's Mr P's ancestor traded one for a farm with 50 acres of land in WVa.

The word "professional" may be the marker here with the police.

A bathtub, meaning a porcelain one, with plumbing.  Lots of galvanized & cooper tubs around filled and emptied manually.  Retrofitting existing houses to plumbing was a big deal for most Americans.  Both of us, now in our 60's, remember tales of houses being remodeled for plumbing by our grandparents.  In one case (WV PA border) it wasn't until after WW II that a flush toilet went into the house. The 1% to 5% of the time, had such things earlier earlier.
