  •  Just because you are eligible for Medicare doesn't (18+ / 0-)

    mean you have to sign up with a physician. You don't even HAVE to sign up for Medicare Part B (for which you will pay $100/month - you don't pay for base coverage Medicare).  You don't have to sign up for drug coverage.  If you don't sign up for these things when you are first eligible, it will cost you later to do so.

    But if you sign up for Medicare, you are at least covered for (some) hospital costs if you should have an accident or sudden medical emergency; and I think you will find if your income is low enough, the other costs will be reduced or written off.  

    If you sign up for a Medicare Advantage program, you do have to pick a doctor from your plan's list - but that doesn't mean you ever have to go see them! But they will be there, at greatly reduced cost, if you should need them.

    This is know as CYA - it is not coercion, you are not forced to do anything.
