  •  It's also possible (8+ / 0-)

he can find out (or knows already) and can't do a damn thing about it.

It's risible how the younger Assad keeps getting depicted as this omnipotent source of evil.  He's actually pretty weak, untrained for governing and relying heavily on his dad's nomenklatura.

    •  Yes, thats a possibility (3+ / 0-)

we really don't know that much about the inner workings of Syria/Assad. Who's really in power there? how does their government function?
he's western educated and at least aware of Western sensibilities.  he's obviously intelligent and doesn't really fit the Saddam mold of dictator.
It hard to figure out who's the wrongest here. I say when you can't tell who's the most wrong, don't help ANY of them

    •  IF Assad (0+ / 0-)

really can't do a damn thing about it, he has no real control over his CW and needs to seek assistance ASAP from other countries.

      Failing that, he is accountable.

Only thing is, he has no friends except for the Iranians and the Russians, and the latter hardly qualify as "friends."  Just about everyone else is an enemy who'd just as soon kill him as help him control his WMDs.

Until, perhaps, Putin made his offer yesterday.  But that remains to be seen.  Our President, for instance, is still insisting on a war authorization.
