    maybe he is losing his grip on elements of his own military. He has certainly had defections to the rebel side. It is conceivable there are officers sensing his imminent fall who may be jostling for power. I would be surprised if our intelligence did not already know this. Maybe that hints to the urgency -- fear that Assad is losing control of all those weapons.

    Either way, it is not our fight because everything is too murky and we'd be arguably hurting as much (or more) as we would be helping.
