  •  Well, let's see how he's doing with this: (22+ / 0-)

    1. He's achieved his stated objective. Assad ain't gonna shoot off any more chemical weapons. Obama scared the bejesus out of him.

    2. He won't lose a vote in Congress on this now, because there most likely won't be a vote in Congress.

    3. He made the moral case, something nobody else was focusing on, and for once Sully is right: he has put this issue of chemical weapons before the world again and made it prominent.

    4. He might even accomplish more than his original objective, and actually get rid of Syria's chemical weapons. At the least, he got them to admit they had 'em.

    5. He brought Russia back into the fold, at least a bit, and broke through a bit of the deadlock that appeared to be forming between Putin and the rest of the world. (I posted this comment on the Motley Moose yesterday)

Personally, ever since Obama said he'd go through Congress I've thought that he never intended actually to launch the missiles into Syria. It's obvious that the House at least would never approve it. Why go to Congress when you know they'll say no? To stall, perhaps, while something was going on behind the scenes? I had no idea. But it was pretty clear from that point that launching missiles was not the prime objective.

Obama already has mostly won this round, IF everything holds steady.
