The last time we had 17 carriers was 1972. We have a much smaller navy now. As to deployment, allowing for overhauls, shipyard availabilities, and training requirements, 4 or 5, maybe 6 carriers out of the 10 could be deployed at any one time.

    Total number of warships:
    1972 - 654
    2011 - 285

As to the current number of cruisers, what was once called a frigate or a destroyer leader is now called a cruiser. We "upgraded" the Navy by "upgrading" what we call the same ships.

Others have simply gotten old. I prefer to think I've been tempered by time.

Maybe I got the terminology wrong, but a decade ago this expert was  talking about battlegroups with considerable firepower (mainly due to Argus? cruisers). There were 17 of them deployed, and just one of those groups had the firepower of the entire Italian navy

Does that make more sense? (Would like to get this right for future reference)
