dear to my heart. Years ago I argued that people should be allowed to make Israel/Nazi comparisons, if they were open to debate and backed up their analogy.

In practice, I've never seen that happen. That analogy is a molotov cocktail, that turns reasonable discussion into a flamefest. Except for a handful of times, when someone linked to an article where someone else had made that comparison. So I do believe it's possible, for a careful, reasonable Kossack to quote such a comparison, and keep the ensuing discussion calm and rational.

We've argued a lot about what speech is acceptable here, and many in I/P have tried to ban other analogies - notably, the apartheid comparison. But the Israel/apartheid analogy is so widely used, and well-supported in fact, that it would be ridiculous to forbid it here.

Meteor Blades ruled that the Israel/Nazi analogy is forbidden in I/P, because in practice strong believers on both sides of the debate always proceed from that, to angry, insulting pie-fights, which derail discussion of the diary. Anyone who has serious, specific criticisms of Israeli policies needs to show enough respect for the pain and anguish of the Holocaust, and for thoughtful argument, to find more accurate and less inflammatory analogies.

    Here endeth the sermon.
