  •  Electoral results are not as simple as (10+ / 0-)

    we think they are.

The meme that the source of our problems is in the stupidity of the electorate is widely believed, yet the opinions of the electorate on issues are almost always closer to ours than to either political party.

I don't have the answers (yet) but I'd encourage a more critical appraisal of the problem before we decide there's a simple one-to-one correspondence between what people believe and who gets elected. There's a powerful relationship there, but we act like we're living in some kind of pure direct democracy:  the people move right! we get a right-wing government. the people move left! we get a left-wing one.

I'm not sure exactly what's going on in the bowels of our electoral process, but I'm pretty sure it's not that.

For one thing, that leaves out the way all available electoral choices are controlled--I'm not sure by whom, but it sure ain't the people, that's for sure.

I tried to go online to find a similar bear head...but when I searched “Big Bear Head” it gave me a San Diego craigslist ad entitled “Big Bear needs some quick head now” and then I just decided to never go on the internet again.--Jenny Lawson
