  •  first thing AM I read juan cole (3+ / 0-)

have done it for over a decade

    lots of middle east news

but in reading Jeremy Scahill's well researched and well written book, I realize how little I know about some countries, especially countries where we are waging war already

we are waging wars through the special ops units, e.g. JSOC and one of the units in there, Seal Team 6

Cole pointed out that the US/Russia deal on chemical weapons may be the start of moving to a multi polar world for foreign policy and thus moving away from US's role for the last 60 years

    •  I think I'm going to have to make Prof. Cole (0+ / 0-)

part of my daily AM read too.  I knew of him but haven't visited his website in ages.  I was delighted today to find the list of books there that he suggests about the Middle East.

Interesting possibilities if what Cole points out re: multi-polar world for foreign police and away from US dominance in that arena comes into being.  I've come across writings on various econ blogs I check that the US may also be seeing less dominance in the financial/economic sphere as well one day.  There's some interest in world currency no longer being pegged to the dollar but instead to a basket of currencies.  That could also have interesting repercussions to US/British dominance in the financial arena.

PS I haven't even gotten a copy of Scahill's book yet and your comment made me put it at the top of my "book shopping" list.  Placing an order at Barnes and Noble in a few days.  Can't wait to get it.  The more I hear from Scahill, the more thankful I am for him.
