    ...and in the late 20th century as well.

    This expectation of the imminent Return colored many of the Christians' views of how they were expected to behave in those final days.  We can see parallels up into the 19th Century when from time to time, devout followers would give away all their possessions, don white robes and gather on hillsides to await the Second Coming
    The occurrences are too frequent to link.  I've always felt that this is the height of religious narcissism -- that Jesus was going to ride down on his white horse in your lifetime -- and save you from the heathens by beaming you directly to the Father.  

    I mean, for Christ's sake, Jehovah's Witnesses have a better schtick.
