    that the Senate would not go along. Otherwise, considering that SNAP represents a steady stream of revenue for food stores and other "approved" merchants, a 5% reduction would have been suicidal. This way they can satisfy the mean streak in the electorate and tell their corporate cronies they really didn't mean it.

    (Funny, the two meanings of "mean.")

    In addition to providing a subsidy to grocers, whose profit margin is reputed to be very slim, SNAP and other assistance programs are a lucrative enterprise for the card-issuing industry. Florida has just transitioned to a new "provider" that's going to "save" the state $21 million in the next few years by preventing "fraud."
    Given that Florida is going to lose $379 million in the next eleven months, the "savings" hardly seem significant.
