"Zealot" by Reza Aslan.   According to Aslan,  what Jesus was doing was confounding the authorities who were trying to set him up to betray Rome publicly.  Jesus' answer actually was clever.   By telling them to "Render back to Ceaser those things that belong to Ceasar, and to God those things that belong to God" he was insinuating that since the coin had Ceaser's picture, it indeed was his.  But since the land was "God's, the land should not belong to Rome.   So he did not publicly betray Rome in that instance.

Also, according to Aslan, the authorities were able to get Jesus for sedition because of what he did to the money changers in the temple.  It's complicated but interesting to read his view of that incident.

Unlike O'Reilly, Aslan puts the motives/actions of Jesus in context of historical times.  O'Reilly, not surprisingly writes to help himself and his ilk justify their own greed, hate mongering, nastiness and general desire to plunder, pillage, and sin while still believing their afterlife will be rewarding.
