    And you're right, there was definitely a noir-ish quality to American Gods. He was playing around a lot.

    Have you read Tim Powers' novel Last Call yet? He was mining similar turf prior to Gaiman: I have a comment here about it (scroll down).

      The only Tim Powers novel that I have read is Dinner at Deviant's Palace. It has a car body pulled by horses just like  on the cover.

      It was the first time that I heard the word "sport" used as a polite euphemism for "mutant."

        It was so long ago, I need to reread, but I think that novel was absolutely brilliant, and I think you'll like it too.
