Illustration by Jansson for Moominland Midwinter AKA "Trollvinter."

This is a unique treasure of a book that is much more than a fantasy or children's story -- it is set in the Gulf of Finland on a bleak island, much like the setting of her novel The Summer's Book, which was also very much like the sea-swept sliver of land where she and her loved ones stayed to get away from Helsinki in the sunny months of the Finnish year.

Even in translation, she strikes chords of deep emotion in the most surprising ways.
