Still a relatively young man too.

I read most of his early novels and enjoyed them but later on, it seemed he was trying too hard with formula pieces.  Hunt for Red October was a truly fine novel, with all the elements needed to make it good, especially for a technophile. Later, they devolved into hardware catalogs and I lost interest. On the whole, however, he did create a new genre of fiction, and I think for that alone he should be credited as being a great novelist. When documentary filmmakers called on him as an expert commentator on military matters, he was always interesting. For someone who was never able to serve himself, his knowledge was encyclopedic. I suspect one of his great regrets in life was the fact his poor eyesight kept him out of the service.

Wishing peace and good memories to his family and loved ones.
