  •  Well, sunny beaches, whodathunkit? (4+ / 0-)

First I've heard in the way of confirmation. Gotta link?

Srsly, I was absolutely convinced of that right after I read the damn thing. I loved H4RO & enjoyed the hell out of RSR, but that...

Another thing I kept running into when I was actively reading "mindcandy" is how many nicely-paced technothrillers turn totally frantic within about 50 pages of the end, rushing here & there trying to wrap up all the loose ends of the plot.

For some reason it reminds me of a classic joke in which humans are asked to demonstrate their reproductive methods for a bunch of Martians (or, in John Brunner's novel Stand on Zanzibar, a self-aware computer named Shalmaneser). After they chosen couple has copulated, the audience ask(s) where the baby is. "Oh, you have to wait nine months for that!"

"In that case," say(s) the observer(s), "why were you in such a hurry at the end?" < rimshot >

    But I digress...

My best conjecture was that the author was banging up against his contractual deadline for delivery of the MS & didn't have time to do a proper job. But it might also have been some sort of contractual page limitation. Or the junior editors cutting the text down to a producible size may have had orders to start cutting at the end & work backwards... In any case I never did figure it out.

Around the time of publication of PG.  I can't find a quick reference online, but that's my recollection at the time.

(That sound you are hearing is a paradigm being shifted at Warp Factor Infinity using no clutch.)
