    His earliest works were not just readable, they were interesting and captivating.  The Hunt for Red October was based on a true story. A few minor differences: It was an attack sub, not a nuclear sub. The defection had the support of most crew members. The soviets thought for many years that the ship had a catastrophic failure - they did not suspect what really happened.

    The captain was Lithuanian, and lived the remainder of his life in California. I believe he died 5-10 years ago.

    Red Storm Rising  was also captivating, especially how things could go south so easily, so quickly. Much of his later works were crap, especially with his asst. hatchet writers. But the first 4? good adventure stories.

    What we call god is merely a living creature with superior technology & understanding. If their fragile egos demand prayer, they lose that superiority.
