    Reagan, who was made to be a wonderful leader, ready to do whatever was necessary to eliminate any threat to the Pope.  Carter, on the other hand, was trashed by name in a backhanded compliment.   Thatcher also came out very well in that novel.

    Even with the right wing slant of Clancy's novels, I still enjoyed the early ones on a pure entertainment level (can't go wrong with a good commie plot :).  Once the cold war ended and Jack Ryan started getting promoted, his writing went downhill.  Environmentalists just aren't the compelling enemies that the KGB were.
