  •  Oh that makes me so sad. (6+ / 0-)

I'm Mennonite!!! Not practicing anymore, but I was raised in the church, and there are many, many wonderful things about the Mennonite faith.

My father's a science prof, so we always lived in college towns and attended very liberal Mennonite churches. The focus was always on mission work for the poor, disaster assistance and peace-oriented activities (Mennonites are one of a handful of faiths traditionally allowed to register as conscietious objectors).

It makes me sick that more conservative Mennonites and the Amish have been duped by these war-mongering scoundrels who stand against every principle the church espouses.

an overly broad brush...but it's true that there are tons of Mennonites and Amish here, and while I live in the city (which is pretty blue) the surrounding county is very red, and includes a lot of Anabaptists.

And many of our Mennonites are indeed more progressive -- like your family. I myself was raised in a more-liberal Anabaptist tradition yet my parents always voted GOP.

My mother voted GOP b/c her father did. Her father, btw, was a convert to an Anabaptist tradition (Brethren). Why did he vote GOP? They were the party of the rich, and he wanted to be rich.

You see the inherent contradiction with the religion he apparently espoused.

Both of my father's two brothers became Republicans. I've just never understood how they reconciled their faith to their politics, particularly when my paternal grandparents steadfastly refused to vote at all for fear they'd be called for jury duty (they did not want to be in the position of judging or condemning a man).

It really saddens me that so many have been sucked in by the GOP when the Democratic platform aligns so much closer to the tenets of the faith. And because I was interested, I did some Googling and found this interesting article.

Thanks for the conversation, Youffraita! I'm off the bed, finally.

to encounter other Mennonites/Anabaptists on DK!

I'm a professor's-daughter as well, and active in a progressive urban Mennonite congregation.  My Mennonite grandfather swung from GOP to Dem back sometime mid-century or so and his descendants have stayed that course, but other branches of the family remain duped by the war-mongering scoundrels (nice turn of phrase!)

      Alas.
