scarier to the average American, particularly Republicans and closet-'pub "independents,", who are the ones we're going to have to convince to vote against their own party.

    •  Trouble is, they don't want to destroy the gov't (4+ / 0-)

altogether. They want to subvert it -- turn it to a purpose other than the one laid out in its mission statement, the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution. So "subversive" would be more apt; unfortunately, it's tainted by other connotations left over from the HUAC years.

They want to meld the military with the corporate, make the courts a political arm of their totalitarian plutocratic system, and destroy democracy.

        •  I don't think they are actually fascists. (3+ / 0-)

Mind you, I think they wouldn't be unhappy if fascism were imposed, and I think they'd be more content with fascism than with the system we have now. But I don't believe that fascism per se is their goal. Many of them are authoritarian followers, but few are outright thugs. Fascism is essentially gangsterism with snappy uniforms.

          •  Let's consider characteristics of fascism (5+ / 0-)

Not all fascists are jack-booted thugs, some are shopkeepers. Here is a link to the "Fourteen Defining Characteristics of Fascism" by Dr.Lawrence Britt:

The resemblance of the current Republican Party's world view to classic fascism is unnerving.

            •  Oh, I'm sure they're being LED by fascists. (5+ / 0-)

But the fascists are working behind the scenes, not out in the open. The Tea Partiers aren't fascists -- they're the fascists' "useful idiots."

I agree, most of the rank and file are not consiciously fascists. However, the fact that their world view is being shaped behind the scenes by fascists does not excuse them for adopting those views.

    •  It's still not the right word (3+ / 0-)

Dems using that as a scare word is just like republicans calling Obama Hitler or socialist. It isn't at all accurate, but it scares people.

Anarchism is a tradition that has self-identified with the word anarchist dating back to 1840, when anti-capitalist Proudhon coined the term.

It is the constant misusing of the term in the capitalist press that fosters this uninformed impression. Anarchism means without authority, but not without social organization. This is widely misunderstood.

It's a silly use of the word and won't be taken seriously, just as socialist, communist and those kinds of things are not taken seriously about Obama.  In fact, it's hilarious when people call him that.  It's also ridiculous to call these Republicans anarchists.  They are anything but.  It just shows how much people who use that word haven't taken the time to learn what it means.
