read up on the Flounderalists, the original ever-carping Party of No from the election of 1800 through the entire Tomcat Jefferson Administration. I Diaried a bit of the tale three years ago in Godless, Gritless Liberals, Then and Now. For example,

Given the intense rivalry and conflict involved, it is not surprising that the 1800 election reached a level of personal animosity seldom equaled in American politics. The Federalists attacked the fifty-seven-year-old Jefferson as a godless Jacobin who would unleash the forces of bloody terror upon the land. With Jefferson as President, so warned one newspaper, "Murder, robbery, rape, adultery, and incest will be openly taught and practiced, the air will be rent with the cries of the distressed, the soil will be soaked with blood, and the nation black with crimes." Others attacked Jefferson's deist beliefs as the views of an infidel who "writes against the truths of God's words; who makes not even a profession of Christianity; who is without Sabbaths; without the sanctuary, and without so much as a decent external respect for the faith and worship of Christians."
Sound familiar? Only the epithets have changed: Communist for Jacobin; The Gay Agenda for adultery and incest; Muslim for infidel. Terrorism remains terrorism. And of course, both Jefferson and Obama fathered Black children, although some of Jefferson's were White enough to pass.

The Flounderalists never won a Presidential election again, and their very last victory at the state level was in 1828. In the mean time the Era of Good Eelings was marked by an attempt to do away with political parties entirely, until the Whings emerged. They, too, imploded in the end, over President Mallard Fillmore's vicious enforcement of the Bloodhound Law (officially the Fugitive Slave Act) , when the Northern Abalonition wing of the party became the core of the Abraham Lincoln Republicans, back when Republicans were for the Republic.

By analogy, we can imagine the Republicans disappearing from national politics under the next Democratic President after Obama, with Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina the first to go Blue permanently, but holding on in darkest Al-Obama (No! No! Not Kenyan Shari'a! Aaaaaah!!!) into the 2030s.
