  •  The more this goes on (12+ / 0-)

the more it really feels like the endgame for defeating the GOP extremists, once and for all.

And if the extremists are defeated, the rest of the GOP won't have the numbers to be an effective opposition party to the Democrats.

Let's do this. The damage they can inflict on our economy will be temporary. Their defeat can be permanent.

I agree it needs to be done, and it will be expensive in every way.

But don't kid yourself that any victory is permanent.
Evolution happens, completely unforeseen circumstances happen, old voters die, new voters are born, memories fade...

Just as gun culture is a bigger problem than mass murders, there are a lot of cultural and socioeconomic conditions in this country that will have to evolve over time for lasting change.

Change is constant. We usually don't really know how things will change -- but we do know that they will change. We can work for the outcomes we want, but we know there will be others working against us.

For the sake of America and her people, I hope we prevail for at least long enough to lead the country and her citizens to a more just future.

        Ask the Whigs.

Something may take their place, but it won't be as crazy if it hopes to be an effective opposition.

or it'll be even more insane. Albeit with a veneer of respectability to entice moneyed conservative, a second veneer of faux populism to cover up the ongoing racism and xenophobia that is used to manipulate the tea-party crowd into voting against their own economic interests, and some new twist that'll somehow or another tie into the more insane aspects of homegrown fundamentalism.

Consider that even after World War II there is still a functioning extreme right wing in much of Western Europe. And they occasionally swerve just close enough to the mainstream to gain influence on or even control of their national governments.

The Whigs joined the new Republican Party of 1854.
