  •  Well, I did wonder about this too! (0+ / 0-)
I would have been stuck on the question "How did that damn butter get up there?"
You must have a Beautiful Mind.
Hmmm.  I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or not!   :-)
    •  OMG!I meant it as a compliment without thinking (1+ / 0-)

about what that phrase conjures up due to the movie (mental illness and schizophrenia) and I also totally forgot the Barbara Bush connection as well.

Talk about stepping in it! I really did mean without irony that I admired the beautiful associative path your brain took, but your smiley indicates you knew that, thank goodness.

I hadn't thought of the Barbara Bush connection either!

The funny part -- which may be significant to the butter story or not -- is that when I had to take the MMPI psychological test as a part of one of my graduate school courses, I actually did come out a bit high on the "schizophrenia" scale!

(Of course, the MMPI makes everyone look a bit crazy, as that's the point of what it measures.)

That worried me a bit, but my advisor said it just indicated that I was more "abstract" and "ethereal" (?!) than the average person -- whatever that means!

It did make me think of "mental illness" as more of a continuum, though, rather than a black-and-white/"you either have it or you don't" thing.  And the truth is, I can see things in myself that, while still within the range of a normal, functional person, are a bit more toward "schizophrenic" than most people I know.

For example, I am more "connections" focused than most people -- the butter story may be an example -- and am more a generalist than a specialist ... interested in the overlaps between many different fields, and seeing them all as part of one big whole.  Artificial boundaries and borders tend to irritate me.

At the same time, I can have a hard time filtering out sensory information and can get really anxious in noisy, chaotic environments like bars.  I don't get how other people can focus on a conversation in a place like that, because I get caught up in several conversations at once, and can't tune out the background noise.  I can only imagine that if I'm a 2.5, say, on the scale, how hellish everyday life must be for a full-blown schizophrenic living at level 10, unable to filter out anything, and making out-of-control connections between everything.
