I think they will hold out to the very last moment possible, hoping Obama will cave. It will be interesting to see what happens first. Will Boehner give in or will republicans join the discharge petition.

    •  I sure hope Obama has the balls to wait them out. (5+ / 0-)

And then to produce an executive order, based on the 14th amendment, raising the debt ceiling about 25 seconds before we go into default.  Let that battle be fought in court.  In the short term the economy is saved, and the Republicans look like the crazed nihilists they are, and in the long term the DOJ has the opportunity to make the case that with the passing of a budget, congress has already authorized spending, and the paying of the subsequent bills, and therefore voting to raise the debt ceiling is unnecessarily redundant  and obstructive to the good order of the running of the government and should be struck down permanently.  The courts might not agree, but the court process will give congress time to rewrite or repeal that sucker.

If the debt ceiling is not lifted within the next 48 hours, he will produce an executive order eliminating the debt ceiling forever.  Also:  He if the government is not opened up within the next 48 hours, propose to write a second executive order to pay any person who is below twice the poverty line, who has gone unpaid due to the government shutdown 125% of what they were owed as restitution for Republican malfeasance.  And include any government program designed to service this segment of the population with the extra money to be distributed as the program managers see fit.

Then, let the negotiations begin.  This one-way bargaining is just wrong.

Even Democrats can be asses. Look at Rahm Emanuel.
