  •  Jesus, when I was a boy my dad and I (4+ / 0-)

took a trip out to Big Bend. This was 1982 I think. We misjudged the distances or something and thought we would be able to find a motel but none ever appeared, driving up along the rode that follow the river.

We saw the lights up ahead and rolled in to Presidio and thought we had found out spot. Pulling into a convenience store we thought we could ask for directions but never got out of the car. The parking lot was occupied by 30 or so feral dogs who surrounded the car.

We continued on along the road through town, then turned around when town ended. There were only pickups cruising up and down the drag, again and again.

One of those pickups decided to follow us out of town. My dad was driving pretty fast and when I turned around I could see the headlights racing to catch up with us.

"Load that .38 in the glove." My dad told me. So I did, and being a proficient shooter by that time I had the pistol loaded and handed it over.

Dad stuck it between his legs and said "Hold on" and did executed a flawless 180 at a slight widening in the road at about. The drop on the other side I could not see but knew was a drop to the death.

We had lost the pick over a ridge and were now heading towards it. My dad stuck the pistol out the window and slowed down, training the gun on the driver as he passed. We never saw them again.

Two weeks later Alpine had their big explosion. I will never forget that part of Texas.
