    The flag in question was used by Tennessee, and the army of Northern Virginia, and was used on confederate ships as the naval jack.

    Of course, as "the confederate flag" took on popularity in opposition to civil rights, the fact it was a military battle flag that was used was meant to intimidate, not to mention the symbolism of the St. Andrew's cross -- both an association with the Upland Scots and ethnic "pride," but also that it's a big-ass "X."  

    Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.
