  •  I first encountered Keith Jarrett (4+ / 0-)

with his solo album, Facing You, and especially the first track, In Front.  I was sixteen and thought I knew what improvisation was; wow, was I wrong.  I proceeded to wear out several copies of the Koln Concert.

Jarrett had suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome for many years, yet he still manages to produce amazing music.  For those who like their solo piano restrained, try The Melody, at Night, with You, a collection of mostly standards; those of a classical bent should hear his recording of Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87.
