  •  Reid has it right. He's already daring the GOP (12+ / 0-)

    to maintain the defense sequester cuts during an election year.  Democrats will not be caving for fear of these cuts. And they won't trade those cuts for entitlement cuts.

    This is about staking out positions and setting the terms of debate.  The nihilist wing of the GOP will probably not want to do any deal of any sort, but the rest of the GOP will be worried about going into the 2014 election with so many vulnerabilities ranging from the shutdown to the sequester to the lack of any meaningful agenda.  If Boehner and McConnell want a deal, it will have to be with Democratic votes and Democratic priorities.

      that the sequester cuts were front-loaded heavily against the D side of the table the first year.

      i don't think it's far-fetched at all to think that shutdown/default was planned for exactly this date.  They would get their desired side of the sequester for a year, then pull the shutdown default stunt to retrade the whole deal--thrown in some Obamacare defunding for principled kicks--just before their side of the sequester bargain became effective.
