their necks, so we can point at them. Now we get the target on our backs. Makes sense in some reality but not in my reality.

    •  It removes entitlement cuts from... (10+ / 0-)

      the conversation.

Immigration will be the issue in 2014. I suspect the bargaining chip will be the farm bill.

      It's Clintonesque. :)

I'm not paranoid or anything. Everyone just thinks I am.

      •  Why not just say "we're not going to cut (22+ / 0-)

entitlements"? How is putting it on the table a win, particularly if you don't want to do it anyway?

Which sounds better, "I'm not going to kill this dog!" or "I'm not going to kill this dog unless you give me your cat!"? I would argue that the latter still makes you sound like a dog-murderer, regardless of how much the other person loves their cat.

sounding to anyone who isn't glued to politics 24/7, so, it doesn't create a target just by talking about it

it's the reason that the GOP don't ever get punished by their older voting base for advocating this shit

but if they actually make the cuts they will be in big trouble, unless they get the democrats to do it too for cover, but we won't do it without raising taxes in exchange, which they won't do, so, it's a catch 22

if i thought that Obama actually wanted to make cuts to entitlements for nothing, then i would be screaming bloody murder too

Everyone's just going to be okay with Obama proposing "small" SS cuts?

Sneakers is right. Putting Chained CPI on the table at all is a dumb move. They're not keeping it on the table because they want the Republicans to say "no" to it, they're putting it on the table because they (and I mean Obama and the Democrats) want it.

Why not propose actually strengthening SS and increasing benefits? The GOP will say no to that just like everything else, so why propose something that will actually differentiate the Dems from Republicans in terms of protecting the retirement of the middle class?

Or is that not "Clintonesque" enough?

This isn't brilliant strategery "painting Republicans into the corner", it's the same old deficit hysteria. Can't put lipstick on that pig.

Banking on the American people to be able to sort all this out and declare the adult in the room the winner is a very big bet. -Digby

      •  Immigration reform may belong in the farm bill (1+ / 0-)

After all, a lot of farm labor is done by unauthorized immigrants.

We're all pretty strange one way or another; some of us just hide it better. "Normal" is a dryer setting.
