View Diary: Reid: Social Security cuts for defense sequester relief would be a 'stupid trade' (255 comments)

  •  I am a bit worried about the way he phrased it. (13+ / 0-)

He won't trade cuts for cuts, but he would trade cuts for revenue. Which brings us right back to the Grand Bargain. There were supposed to be revenue raisers in that Bargain, mostly through closing loopholes (note they're saying revenue not tax increases.)

I find this encouraging and disquieting all at once. On the one hand, I'm relieved to see even this much support for Social Security. On the other hand, I see the opening for cutting it.

Let's hope Reid decides to unequivocally defend Social Security.

That would set up the 2014 season nicely.

I tried to go online to find a similar bear head...but when I searched “Big Bear Head” it gave me a San Diego craigslist ad entitled “Big Bear needs some quick head now” and then I just decided to never go on the internet again.--Jenny Lawson

    •  Not thrilled about that comment, either. However, (6+ / 0-)

since the Repubs absolutely refuse to agree to any revenue increases, we probably don't need to be too worried about it.

      •  It's still a liability. (3+ / 0-)

I'd rather hear Reid telling the truth: SS cuts are unnecessary and a bad idea.

Suppose Boehner learns from the shutdown that the Tea Party does not in fact own his ass. Suddenly maybe he feels like he can take yes for an answer. And now we have the Grand Bargain, which Reid explicitly allowed for.

I'd really love to hope for something other than being saved by the Tea Party.

win seats in 2014. All the Democrats need do is a full-throated, unequivocal defense of Social Security, and between that and this Republican debacle, we'd have 'em. In my humble opinion, and barring any huge change in the next 11 months like a war.
